IOM MHD joined an international coalition for the benefit of “language discordant” patients

16 october 2013 - IOM MHD RO Brussles has joined an international coalition convened by the McGill University (Canada) and also consisted of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Agency for Healthcare research and Quality, USA to benefit patients who are “language discordant” (migrants who do not speak the same language as their healthcare providers). Over 80% of US and Canadian healthcare facilities provide services to patients who are “LD”.

The coalition will collaborate to conduct research that promotes global changes in healthcare for these populations, and in each of the countries – EU MS, Canada, and USA.  The research priorities the coalition will identify will help to better engage national health systems as well as patient groups to conduct international collaborative quality improvement and policy-making efforts.

IOM MHD signs a collaboration framework with WHO EURO to coordinate work on migration health in Europe
 
4 October 2013 - IOM MHD Brussels and WHO EURO (Venice office) sign a collaboration framework between the EQUI-HEALTH project: “Fostering health provision for migrants, the Roma and other vulnerable groups”, sub-project on Promoting Migrant Health at The Southern EU borders (MH-SEUB) and WHO “Public Health Aspects of Migration in Europe” project.
 
The objective of EQUI-HEALTH component on Southern EU Borders is to build a comprehensive multi-sectoral approach in upholding migrant and public health: situational assessments, discussions about data collection mechanisms and referral systems as well as prioritization of capacity building needs to increase the understanding of migrant, occupational and public health, including in open/closed centers and border facilities, and enhance the capacity of public health authorities, law enforcement services and healthcare providers.

MHD RO co-organizer and active participant in International Conference on Intercultural Mediation in Healthcare

4 October 2013 - IOM MHD co-organized and actively participated in the International Conference on Intercultural Mediation in Healthcare in Huelva, Spain (19-20th of September 2013), organized by the University of Huelva, Junta de Andalucia, Sociedad Andaluza de Medezina Familiar y Communitaria, Red Isir Immiracion y Salud and other partners. Mrs. Roumyana Benedict, IOM Senior Regional Migration Health Advisor for Europe and Central Asia and Mr. Guglielmo Schinina, Head, Mental Health, Psychological Response and Intercultural Communication Section, IOM (Geneva) opened the conference with key speaker interventions under a plenary session on “European intercultural mediation models in health care and challenges for health systems”.

MHD RO Brussels key speaker at the European Health Forum Gastein (2-4 October 2013, Austria)

1 October 2013 - IOM MHD RO Brussels is to participate at a workshop on “Anti-discrimination in health” organized by DG Sanco within its first session at the European Health Forum Gastein - the leading health policy event in the EU. The workshop has for objectives to identify issues in relation to discrimination in the access to healthcare in the EU, highlight the European Commission's commitment to the promotion and protection of fundamental rights in access to healthcare and discuss EU and Member States’ possible actions on improving the access to healthcare in the EU. Mrs. Roumyana Benedict, IOM Senior Regional Migration Health Advisor for Europe and Central Asia, and Equi-Health Project Manager, is to participate in the panel discussion of the workshop.
