Migration Policy Group: Health to be added to MIPEX at the request of IOM

21 April 2015 - “At the request and with the help of the IOM, health will be added to the forthcoming edition of Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX)”, Jan Niessen, Director of the Migration Policy Group (MPG), announced in an article “Producing and using indicators and indices in the migration policy field” (pages 17 - 21) published in Migration Policy Practice bi-monthly journal.

Niessen’s article focuses on the development of indicators and indices which can be used to compare and assess migration policies and to make precise suggestions for improvements.

Since December 2013, IOM, Migration Policy Group and research network ADAPT COST have been working together to enrich the next edition of the Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX) with a new Strand on Health. The research started in 2014 and covers all EU Member States, as well as Turkey, Norway, Switzerland and other OECD members such as Canada, the United States, Australia, Japan and Korea. The updating of the MIPEX is co-financed by DG Migration & Home Affairs under the European Integration Fund, while the inclusion of the health strand forms part of the IOM’s action EQUI HEALTH (Migrant Health sub-action) co funded by EC and DG Sante. Results are expected to be published on the MIPEX site in the next two months.

MIPEX is being used by a variety of policy actors:

  • Ministers responsible for migration and integration to retain or improve their score
  • International organizations, such as the Council of Europe, the OSCE and IOM, for the preparation of their country visits and reports
  • Agencies, such as Eurostat, to link policies with outcomes
  • Non-governmental agencies to stimulate a well-informed debate
  • Human rights advocates, for monitoring policy and making concrete proposals
  • Academics, for further research
